A Modest Recommendation

06.10.2009 at 17:05 pm (recommendation nation) (, , , )

In the fashion world there are a plethora of fashion magazines to choose from.  Some are crap (if not most), some are just typical (read dull), while a select few are able to deliver entertaining and enjoyable ventures into fashion.  One such magazine leaps over the first two categories and lands ever so elegantly in the latter.

The ‘zine is 10, and if you have not heard of it, then skip those trips to Starbucks and buy a copy.  If you want a magazine that will make you squeal with excitement and possibly wretch, then 10 is the magazine for you.  It is not for those who want to be pandered to, it is a magazine for those who like to think about fashion.  You will see and read (Yes, I understand most of you will only look at the pretty full pagers) works that are there without apologies.

The staff at 10 is not out to please anyone, rather they are out to present the industry as it appears to them, applauding trends and styles they like and shredding those they find less than inspiring.  The articles are varied, often funny, and are in touch with the current ebb-and-flow of the seasons.  Most importantly: big quality photos to hang on your walls! (Let’s be honest)  You may not always like what they print or shoot, but that is the best quality of 10.  It makes you question what fashion is doing, and after reading or flipping through, you will never doubt if what you like or disliked was because they told you to, or because you made up your own mind. 10 is focused on fashion for the ladies, while 10men – you get the picture.  They are printed quarterly in the UK and can be a little difficult to scrounge up in the states, but can usually be found anywhere magazines are sold- for a fee of course.

So, the next time you are looking for something to broaden your fashion senses, and which will not feel like you have read before, then go out and snag a copy of 10.  I don’t think you’ll regret it.

These were the shoes of my childhood. I loved them so much I would sleep in them. I kind of want another pair.

i used to like building out of legos

06.08.2009 at 14:43 pm (trend report)

i think i can safely project that its unlikely this current trend of geometry/architecture has gone unnoticed to the shopping eye.

it feels like everywhere i turn i’ve been seeing the simple hourglass silhouette complicated with any type of protrusive material, angular and/or curved.  while its not a new thing, it feels like its creating a much bigger stir than i can remember over the recent decade.

lady gaga likes geometrics

pop culture drop: lady gaga is undeniably a huge fan of this style with her own twist.

Geometry Marchesa Spring 2009

i’m absolutely  in love with this dress above from the marchesa spring line for its artistic quality.  it honestly takes the idea of walking art to the next level with its obviousness.  definitely reminiscient of art deco in my opinion.

upon browsing a couple of stores online, such as forever 21′s new line twelve by twelve, and american apparel’s strive for complication out of simplicity, you’ll find the blatant marketing for the architectural dress and what not scattered all over.  as much struggle as i have with really liking either one of those companies, i’m surprisingly not mad.
